After showing her debut collection for Sonia Rykiel in the intimate setting of the Parisian label’s Saint-Germain des Prés salons, designer Julie de Libran set the stage for pre-fall at the Jane Hotel in New York City last night. “You know I like to keep things cozy—an open fire, or a singer to serenade you?” said the designer as Sophie Auster and her band performed amid a cluster of comfy vintage sofas in the hotel’s vestibule. “It’s important to create a bit of ambience.” As models sauntered down the stairs in wide-legged trousers, thick woolen tights, oversize berets, and printed satin skirts, the look of being chez elle was warm and inviting straight off the bat. Libran mined the archives for graphic inspiration, unearthing a wellspring of feminine motifs outside the iconic stripe, and used them to take the jumpsuit dressing of last season in a fresh new direction. Liberty-style floral prints covered diaphanous chiffon onesies and flared pants that recalled the Left Bank bohemian spirit of the house, a freewheeling seventies wind that has been blowing through the collections in the past couple of seasons.
